The Frenchie Exercise Problem
Here's the thing about French Bulldogs: they need mental and physical stimulation like any dog, but they overheat dangerously fast. Those flat faces mean they can't cool themselves efficiently.
In Ohio summers (and honestly, spring and fall too), long walks aren't always safe. We do short bathroom walks, but that's often not enough to tire them out mentally. A bored Frenchie is a destructive Frenchie.
Enter the snuffle mat.
What's a Snuffle Mat?
It's basically a mat covered in fabric strips, fleece, or other textures that you hide treats in. Your dog has to use their nose to sniff out and dig for the food. It mimics natural foraging behavior and provides mental enrichment.
15 minutes of sniffing can tire a dog out as much as a 30-minute walk. For heat-sensitive breeds like Frenchies, that's huge.
Two Brands We Use
TWOPER Snuffle Mat
This one has good variety — different textures and hiding spots. It's got the standard fleece strips plus some pocket areas and fabric flowers. Good size, not too small.
The fixing handle on the bottom helps keep it in place when the dogs get enthusiastic. Machine washable (important when you have five dogs using it).
Vivifying Snuffle Mat
Similar concept, slightly different design. More "grass-like" fabric strips. Also works well.
Honestly? They're pretty similar. Both do the job. I rotate between them to keep things interesting for the dogs.
How We Use Them
Our snuffle mat routine:
- Prep while dogs are distracted — Hide treats throughout the mat
- Release the hounds — One at a time, or we'd have chaos
- Supervise — Make sure nobody's trying to eat the mat itself
- Rotate — Each dog gets a turn, keeps them occupied for a while
I use small training treats or their regular kibble. Works great as a slow-feeder alternative too if you have a dog that inhales food.
Do They Really Like It?
Yes. They really, genuinely enjoy it. The sniffing and foraging is instinctual — it satisfies something deep in their doggy brains.
That said, the deer antlers are still the bigger hit in our house. If I had to choose one enrichment item, antlers win. But snuffle mats are a great complement, especially on hot days when I need to tire them out indoors.
Care and Cleaning
Both mats are machine washable, which is essential. With five dogs, these things get disgusting with drool and treat residue. I wash them weekly.
Use a gentle cycle and let them air dry — the dryer can damage the fabric strips. They hold up pretty well to regular washing.
Any Downsides?
A few minor things:
- Supervision required — Some dogs will try to chew the fabric, not just sniff for treats
- Setup takes time — Hiding treats throughout isn't instant
- Gets dirty fast — All that nose work means lots of drool
- Not infinitely durable — Will eventually need replacement with heavy use
None of these are dealbreakers. Just things to know.

Keep Your Frenchie's Brain Busy
Snuffle mats — because mental exercise matters, especially when it's too hot to walk.
TWOPER Snuffle Mat → Vivifying Snuffle Mat →The Bottom Line
Snuffle mats are a solid enrichment tool for Frenchies. They're not as exciting as deer antlers (which remain the #1 favorite in our house), but they serve a different purpose — brain work instead of chewing.
For a breed that overheats easily and can't always get outdoor exercise, having indoor enrichment options is important. Snuffle mats fit that need well.
Verdict: Great enrichment for heat-sensitive breeds. Not the most exciting product, but genuinely useful. Especially valuable for summer months.
